For centuries students have struggled to get a realistic sense of the simply enormous proportions of outer space. Space is just so full of, well, space! To help them appreciate their universe a little better, and maybe get a little exercise outdoors (as well as showcase some of Australia’s best art, science, sculpture and IT talents) we need a giant scale model of the solar system!
This involves sculptors to make a student sized scale model of the sun (1.4m diameter) so that students can get a sense of how big the planets would be if they were the sun. We’ll involve Aussie programmers to develop a GPS app that tells students how far they need to walk to ‘arrive’ at the various planets – Mercury is about 60 meters away, and the Heliopause is about as far as Bundaberg PO is from the Alloway Observatory. This means students are getting out and exploring their local community as well! Our App can include fun animations and facts about each planet, such as what it would take to move and live there, and will be developed in consultation with young Bundabergians. We can make a dozen fun geocaches to help students explore the community and their planetary neighbours, and make science fun, safe, and accessible to kids and families of all kinds and ages! This project will revitalise Bundaberg’s STEM and science landscape. We’ll include students, artists and scientists in making - Dr Joe the travelling scientist |
