The child of the city councilman was always a little bit… different. She didn’t like to talk, and she didn’t like to look at people when they spoke to her. But she did, above all else, love to read.
By the age of 9 she’d read everything in her village and beyond. Despairing for want of literature, her family moved to the city of Trope, where she’d soon read everything legally available there. A kind city archivist, who’d noticed her talent, convinced the castle steward allow her to read everything else then too. She’d read it all by the time she was 15. The last few weeks, however, she has been seen spinning slowly around the main pole in the middle of town, not speaking to anyone, not looking at them when the spoke to her. Occasionally, she could be prevailed upon for some tiny inkling of information, for it seemed she could memorize everything she had ever read; the date a law was first written, who bought the first ever pig, the number of citizens whose names began with the letter ‘T’. So, it was a bit of a surprise when, early one spring morning, found her waiting at the town hall doors – unspinning, unspeaking… and more than once, looking directly in people’s eyes. The mayor himself, noting this rare oddity, took it upon himself to be the first to ask her what was amiss. ‘I’ve run out books to read,’ she announced in a voice without hesitation or feeling. ‘I’m going on an adventure to find the lost city of Angelfall.’ Despite his better manners, he could not help but laugh. ‘But that is a perilous two-week journey, and even seasoned adventurers think twice before going there for dragons and treasure! Why would you?’ Her face was set and determined. ‘There is a forgotten city there; Damgees; text places it in a line from Novokayn mountain to Veryfall creek, |
while Maid Wetherstone’s genealogy states it was to be found partway in the line between the edges of Dragon forest and the island of the Wrights. There is a lost city there. I need to find it.’
He looked at her in sympathy, and pity. ‘The Lost City of Angelfall has not been found in a thousand years, though many have died trying, and yet you think you have found their famous Academy? Doubtless, enormous treasures await you there, and enormous dangers. You are too young.’ She looked at his face, his chin, to be specific. ‘I’ll need 4 to 6 brave adventurers, supplies for six weeks, and a carefully calibrated land navigational sixthant with scope. As per item 48/b of article 19 of the town charter, 30% of all treasures will be tithed to the city as the main investor,’ and then she added, as if to herself, ‘though you may keep it all for all I care.’ Then all the others laughed as well, in confusion, and in pity. ‘Child,’ the mayor said softly, trying to sound encouraging, ‘why would you abandon such wealth? And more so, who can you ever find who will accompany you?’ A gentle smirk danced along the scholar’s smile. ‘As for the second question, I have only whom you will employ. Nevertheless, I wish to leave with all haste, by next week, if not today.’ Her voice slowed as it grew in passion, a beam of sunlight piercing the sky to surround her, ‘But as to the first question, well that is obvious, isn’t it? … I need more things to read.’ The announcement reads: city of Trope seeks bold adventurers to depart with all haste to assist a scholar in seeking the lost city of Angelfall. You will be paid a gold coin a day, with a fair portion of all you find there. Danger is guaranteed, death, a distinct possibility. But perhaps you will be the first to lead a talented young scholar in her quest, and her people’s quest, to know more of the world and of the history around, and within, us. |
